Two longtime regional engineering and surveying companies are merging, with Blacksburg-based Anderson & Associates scheduled to start the new year by becoming part of Hurt & Proffitt.

We are excited about the opportunities that the combined forces of our two firms will hold for the future,” Hurt & Proffitt President Bif Johnson said in an announcement. “Our industry is rapidly changing and growing. This acquisition will allow us to meet those changes head on and allow us to expand our services.”

Hurt & Proffitt was founded in 1973. Anderson & Associates was begun in 1968. Both companies are employee-owned. Anderson & Associates converted in 2005 to an ownership model where employees owned all the company’s stock, paying founder Ken Anderson about $2.7 million to purchase his majority take in the company. Hurt & Proffitt converted completely to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan model in 2008, Johnson said.
